Advantages of Teeth Inlays, Onlays & Teeth Fillings

Latest Dental News: Amalgam & White Fillings

If your teeth are damaged or decayed, there is an option to restore health and beauty to your smile.

Dental inlays and onlays are restorations used to repair rear teeth that have mild to moderate tooth decay; they are also used to restore teeth that are fractured or cracked if the damage to them is not severe enough to warrant a dental crown. Inlays and onlays are usually made from porcelain, composite resin and sometimes gold. Inlays and onlays are often used to replace metal fillings for those who desire a more natural-looking smile.

Inlays
Inlays are used to treat teeth that have decay or damage on their top surfaces. Inlay placement is usually done over the space of two visits to your cosmetic dentist. During the first visit, an impression of your tooth will be taken, and a temporary inlay will be placed on the tooth. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where your inlay will be matched to your tooth's specifications. When you return to the dentist, your temporary will be removed and the permanent one will be placed over your tooth.

Onlays
Onlays are used to treat decay that extends to one or more of the cusps (top projections of the tooth). Onlays are placed in much the same manner as inlays with an impression being taken first and a temporary onlay being placed over the tooth. The impression is sent to a lab, where a dental technician creates the onlay according to the tooth's dimensions. One the next visit to the dentist, the temporary is removed and the permanent restoration is placed on the tooth and bonded securely using high-strength dental resins.

Onlays, like inlays, can be created from tooth-colored material, which makes them virtually undetectable to the naked eye. Onlays conserve more tooth structure because their use requires minimal removal of a tooth's surface. Onlays also help patients avoid the eventual need for more extensive treatment with crowns, bridges, or dental implants.

Advantages
Since inlays and onlays are made from durable, tooth-colored porcelain typically, they offer much more enduring and natural-looking results than the metal fillings used in the past. Dentists can securely bond them to the tooth's surface, which adds structural integrity and prevents bacteria from entering and forming cavities.

Additional advantages are:
  • Inlays and onlays, unlike metal fillings, will not expand or contract in response to temperature changes caused by hot/cold foods.
  • Inlays and onlays can replace metal fillings creating a healthier more natural-looking smile.
  • Inlays and onlays are virtually invisible due to being made from tooth-colored material.
  • Inlays and onlays help strengthen the teeth up to 75%.

Invisalign Teeth Braces: Invisible Way for Teeth Straightening

Latest Dental News: Align Technology introduces new features for Invisalign(R) Products

Crooked, uneven teeth have been a source of embarrassment for decades. However, the cure was often worse than the condition itself, as large metal braces made treatment obvious and just plain unattractive.

What’s more, braces have always been an expensive dental treatment. Many families could not afford to have their children fitted with metal braces. Once into adulthood, the stigma of wearing braces kept people from seeking treatment for their dental problems.

Thankfully, cosmetic dentistry now offers innovative, discreet treatment options for those suffering from uneven, poorly spaced, overlapping and crooked teeth. One of the shining stars in teeth straightening is Invisalign®, a clear alternative to braces that over half a million people have already used to improve their smile.

How Does Invisalign® Work?

Invisalign is an alternative to braces that uses clear, comfortable aligners to gradually move the teeth into position. The aligners are custom molded to fit your teeth and are replaced throughout treatment to accommodate the new positioning.

Introduced in 1999, Invisalign® has become hugely popular because it is easy to use and discreet. The aligners are perfectly clear and fit the teeth closely. They can be removed during eating, brushing and sports. The clear aligners also negate the need for bulky metal braces, with wires and bands that often irritate the gums, tongue and cheeks.

The success of Invisalign® treatment rests on the patient. Traditional metal braces are always doing their job; they are constantly pulling the teeth into their new position. Invisalign®, however, is removable. Users must take it out only when necessary and remember to put it back in as soon as possible to allow it to go back to work. Those who forget or leave the aligners out for long periods might be disappointed with the results.

How Can I Get Invisalign®?

If teeth straightening is on your list of things to do this year to improve your smile, head to your cosmetic dentist’s office for a consultation. They will begin by taking x-rays, photographs and dental impressions, which are shipped to Align Technology, the creators of Invisalign®.

Align Technology employs specialized technicians who scan your images and create a 3-D model of your teeth. These technicians then map out the positioning of your teeth as they should look once the treatment is completed. Align’s custom software simulates the movements your teeth must make to get from where they are now to where they should be after treatment.

Your cosmetic dentist reviews the plan set out by the Align technicians and approves the course of treatment. Align then manufactures a clear plastic resin aligner for each stage of your treatment and ships it to your cosmetic dentist.

How Long Does Invisalign® Take?

Treatment time can be as little as six months and usually wraps up in under a year. However, this is influenced by the level of straightening required and the amount of time each day that the patient wears the aligner. Treatment time will increase if the aligner is not worn often enough.

Ask your cosmetic dentist to explain how to properly use your aligners. It is important that you floss and brush your teeth for at least two minutes, three times a day throughout your treatment. Keep your teeth healthy and strong so your smile looks its best once the treatment is finished.

Once your teeth are in the final position, your cosmetic dentist may create a metal or plastic retainer for you to wear at night. This supports the new position and prevents your teeth from moving back into their old, crooked ways.

Wow, Who Wouldn’t Use Invisalign®? It’s Perfect!

Some patients might find Invisalign® treatment hard on their budget, although this depends on the cosmetic dentist supervising the treatment. The minimum price (in American dollars) is $2000, but treatment can range all the way up to $9000. This is slightly to substantially more than traditional metal braces. If the price quoted by your cosmetic dentist sends you into sticker shock, get quotes from others. However, remember to screen each cosmetic dentist carefully to ensure that you get the best care possible.

Patients heavily involved in sports or contact activities might find it difficult to adhere to the 20-hrs per day of recommended wear. Between eating, brushing and other activities, make sure you have this time to dedicate to your treatment.

Invisalign® works well on the front teeth, but crooked or turned back teeth can be hard to correct using this method and may respond better to traditional metal braces. This treatment works best with minor crowding, usually less than 3mm. Cosmetic dentists with extensive experience in teeth straightening may be able to use Invisalign® alternated with traditional braces to get the best results.

For Best Results

The right cosmetic dentistry expert is the key to your treatment success. Choose one with several years experience, plenty of references and a large portfolio of teeth straightening success stories. Your cosmetic dentist must be able to formulate a treatment plan, but also to knowledgably reevaluate that plan each time you use a new aligner to ensure that it is working properly.

If you get to the final stage of treatment and the results are not what you had expected (your teeth are not in the right position), Align Technologies will provide the additional trays required to get your teeth into the desired position. They do this free of charge as long as you have used the trays correctly and your teeth still do not match the result they had promised.

Take great care of your teeth! Look at teeth whitening and dental contouring as the final steps in your complete smile makeover. Wear your retainer every night to keep your teeth properly aligned in the correct position. Then floss, brush and visit your dentist regularly to preserve your new and improved smile for years to come!

Reality & Myths about Cosmetic Surgery & Plastic Surgery

Latest Dental News: Ahmedabad based company launches new dental drug

Many men and women considering cosmetic surgery often have the misconception that there will be absolutely no scarring after their cosmetic surgery. While cosmetic surgeons work as hard as possible to place incisions in unnoticeable locations, when an incision is made or when skin is removed, it is inevitable that a scar will develop. By choosing an experienced, specially trained cosmetic surgeon, patients can make sure that incisions are made as small as possible and concealed by the natural curves of their bodies.

Is cosmetic surgery dangerous?
Cosmetic surgery is a medical procedure and as with all surgeries, there are risks associated for every patient. Recovery times vary, but dangerous is not an accurate word to describe some of the fascinating procedures cosmetic surgeons perform on men and women of all ages every day. Patients should choose a board certified surgeon with adequate experience and training in the type of cosmetic surgery you are considering.

Shopping for the lowest price on a procedure is the best way to find a cosmetic surgeon.

Cosmetic surgery yields permanent physical results and is serious business. Searching for the lowest price cosmetic surgeon in your area is not the best way to choose a cosmetic surgeon. Patients considering cosmetic surgery should find a cosmetic surgeon who is honest with them about the cost, risk, and results of their procedure. Cost must be considered, but it is more important to have a safe procedure performed by a gifted surgery that produces magnificent results.

All cosmetic surgeons are the same.
While cosmetic surgeons may share similar backgrounds, their skill level, experience, and training varies widely. During your initial consultation you should ask your potential cosmetic surgeon about his background and why he’s the best choice for your particular aesthetic goals.

Cosmetic surgeons only perform breast surgery.

While some cosmetic surgeons concentrate on just one or two specific procedures, many cosmetic surgeons provide patients with a wide array of cosmetic surgery options such as:

• Abdominoplasty
• BOTOX
• Arm reduction
• Liposuction
• Facelift
• Rhinoplasty

Recovery from cosmetic surgery is very painful!

Most cosmetic surgery patients find that the recovery period from cosmetic surgery is not nearly as painful as they thought. People who are considering cosmetic surgery, but are wary of the pain associated with the recovery, should schedule an initial consultation with a cosmetic surgeon in their area. During an initial consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will inform you of exactly what you can expect before, during and after cosmetic surgery.

Poularity & Facts About Cosmetic Surgery & Plastic Surgery

Latest Dental News: What is the GDC and why is it important?

Almost any area of the body can be improved or corrected by a plastic surgeon. This diversity in the application of plastic surgery for plastic purposes is seen when you look at the top five procedures performed in 2006. From breast augmentations to tummy tucks, the data show that people are able to fulfill a variety of their goals for their physical appearances through a relationship with a plastic surgeon.

With data collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which does annual surveys among plastic and plastic surgeons in the United States, we can take a look at the five most popular forms of plastic surgery.

1. Breast Augmentation
Surgical enhancement of the size and shape of women's breasts has been steadily increasing in popularity over the years. And with the recent re-approval by the Federal Food and Drug Administration of new silicone breast implants, breast augmentation is expected to continue being pursued by many women.

In 2006, breast augmentation was found to be the number one procedure performed by plastic surgeons. The ASPS reported that 329,000 breast augmentations were done that year. Interestingly, Los Angeles breast reduction is also on the rise.

To briefly describe breast augmentation surgery, it entails a plastic surgeon making incisions under the arm, under the breasts, or under the nipples, depending on the surgical approach selected. Then implants, either saline or silicone, are inserted either beneath the breast tissues or all the way beneath the chest muscles. General anesthesia is normally required, but the surgery is almost always an outpatient procedure.

2. Rhinoplasty
The second most commonly performed surgery is rhinoplasty, which is the reshaping of the nose. Both men and women pursue rhinoplasty. Typical reasons that people cite for changing their noses are lack of satisfaction with the current nose, correction of breathing problems, or reconstruction from injury or birth defect.

During a rhinoplasty procedure, the plastic surgeon makes incisions – sometimes inside the nostrils to reduce scarring – and lifts the nose skin off its underlying structure of bone and cartilage. To reshape the nose, the cartilage that is exposed will be trimmed and sculpted. Then the skin will be returned and refitted to the new shape. A plastic surgeon usually takes one or two hours to complete a rhinoplasty, but more complicated surgeries can take longer. Once again, this is usually an outpatient surgery. General anesthesia is used, or, in some cases, local anesthetic with sedation is sufficient.

3. Liposuction
Liposuction is a versatile technique employed by plastic surgeons that is helpful in reshaping many areas of the body. Liposuction can be used to smooth away extra bulges during a tummy tuck. It can be used in areas of the face and neck, or just about any other area of troubling bulges on the body.

During liposuction, a plastic surgeon injects fluid into the fat cells of the area to be treated. An anesthetic to limit pain and a vessel constricting drug to reduce bleeding are included in the injection. Then, very small incisions are made on the skin and tiny tubes are inserted to suction out the fat.

4. Eyelid Surgery
Also known as blepharoplasty, surgery to the eyelids is used to alleviate drooping or puffy upper and lower eyelids. The plastic benefit achieved is a more youthful appearance. A plastic surgeon will make tiny incisions within the natural folds of the skin to hide scars and lift and rejuvenate the eyelids. This is an outpatient procedure done with local anesthetic and sedation.

5. Tummy Tuck
This plastic procedure with the cute name can produce impressive results. For people who have stretched abdominal skin from multiple pregnancies or a large amount of weight loss, the tummy tuck can smooth the torso. Technically called abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck starts with an incision across the lower abdomen within the bikini or underwear line so the scar will usually be covered. Then the plastic surgeon tightens the abdominal muscles into a smoother and firmer contour. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is stitched back into place.

A tummy tuck is a major cosmetic surgery that often calls for general anesthesia. With this procedure, a visible scar along your lower abdomen will be present, unlike other procedures that are able to minimize or hide scars.

Although you have many options for enhancing your appearance with plastic surgery, only a plastic surgeon can properly assess what can be achieved with your body. If you are considering a plastic procedure, think through your motivations carefully and also take recovery time into account.

Jaw Pain, Headache & Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Treatments

Latest Dental News: New York clinic develops new technique to treat bruxing

Millions of Americans suffer from headaches, shoulder and neck pain, and ringing in the ears without even knowing they may be suffering from a disorder of the jaw. These people often live with the pain and discomfort thinking that stress is the cause, relief is often sought through painkillers and heating pads. However, these symptoms may be the result of a medical condition called Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMD.

While over the counter medication can temporarily alleviate some of the pain associated with TMD, the symptoms usually recur and can progress to debilitating proportions that alter quality of life. Blurred vision, back pain, anxiety, and insomnia can negatively affect the life of someone suffering from TMD. However, there is sound treatment available that not only alleviates the symptoms but corrects the root cause.

Often, when people seek help from their primary care doctor for these symptoms and a host of others associated with TMD, their primary care physician is unable to determine the problem. That’s because only a trained neuromuscular dentist can accurately diagnosis and treat TMD. As a result, patients often hear from their PCP that the problem is stress related.

Now is the time to seek appropriate help for TMD. No one has to continually suffer the painful symptoms of this chronic, degenerative disease when advanced treatment is available. The first step is a thorough examination to properly determine if you have TMD.

State-of-the-Art Treatment Options

Your dentist may need to take X-rays to determine your jaw’s alignment. A sonogram may also be required to determine other malfunctions such as popping and clicking sounds. State-of-the-art computer technology is used to determine how your jaw functions in various positions. These include resting, opening and closing, and a variety of other movements the jaw undergoes such as talking or yawning. Once jaw tracking is complete, your dentist then determines the optimal position for your jaw, and works with you on developing the best options for treatment.

Depending on the severity of your condition, your dentist will prescribe a plan of action that works best for you. There are many options available to correct TMD once it’s been properly diagnosed. Orthodontics specializes in the treatment of misaligned bites. Invisalign is a new treatment that straightens teeth by using clear plastic molds. This invisible option eliminates the need for unattractive metallic braces. Oral surgery may also be necessary.

All About Endodontics & Tooth Discoloration

Latest Dental News: What is Endodontics?

Have you brushed and flossed after every meal since you were tall enough to reach the toothpaste, but still find yourself with a yellow smile? Trust me, the likelihood is that it’s not bad genetics causing you to hide and feel self-conscious about your smile.

How Did My Teeth Turn Yellow?

Even those who maintained perfect oral hygiene find themselves dissatisfied with the yellow smile age has forced them to bear. It’s a simple fact that the porcelain-like enamel that protects our teeth withers away over time. Eventually, all that’s left is the yellow dentin that lurks below.

Factors that stain your teeth are:

• Smoking – Nicotine seeps into and gnaws away at tooth enamel
• Drinking dark colored beverages, such as coffee, tea, soda pop and red wine stain teeth
• Grinding and clenching teeth causes miniscule cracks to appear, paving the way for staining agents to infiltrate enamel
• Aging naturally causes tooth enamel to decay

Kinds Of Stains

The stains that cause tooth discoloration fall into two categories: surface, or extrinsic stains, and intrinsic stains.

Surface stains gather on the surface of your teeth. Frequent exposure to dark beverages, tobacco and sugary foods cause these stains to accumulate.

Intrinsic stains gather inside your teeth and are the result of aging and trauma.

Eliminating Tooth Discoloration

Luckily, advancements in modern dentistry provide countless tooth whitening options to those wishing to brighten their smile.

If you’re looking to just remove surface stains, any tooth whitening procedure will work. However, intrinsic stains are more difficult to remove and require an extensive time commitment. The most common method to remove intrinsic stains is a take home bleaching kit.

The Quickest and Safest Tooth Whitening Technique

One of the most efficient tooth whitening techniques on the market is Zoom! Tooth Whitening. In just forty-five minutes, your teeth will be whitened up to eight shades. Additional benefits to Zoom! Tooth Whitening as opposed to other tooth whitening procedures are:

• Whitens teeth to a greater degree and in a quicker amount of time
• Leaves your teeth less sensitive than other tooth whitening procedures
• Has follow-up gels you can apply to guarantee the best results

Ensuring A Successful Tooth Whitening Procedure

The first step in addressing your tooth discoloration is a consultation with your cosmetic dentist. The goals of this meeting will be to determine if your oral health is satisfactory for having your teeth whitened.

In the twenty-four hour window after having your teeth whitened, it’s essential that you avoid dark colored beverages, acidic and sugary foods and nicotine products. Otherwise you’ll be compromising the success of your procedure.
